The chimney puffs out smoke stacks as I take a long drag off my cigarette

Watching the colors of the sky change from a dazzling aquamarine blue, to a distasteful hue of blacks and grays

The street below me sounds of heavy machinery and labored laughs

The smell strangles my nose and makes my eyes rain, but in a haunting kind of way I find closure in the rays of sun trying to penetrate the smoggy poison

I feel as If the sun is trying to lighten my mood, clearing the depressed air I’m caught in

I close my eyes

take another deep drag and ponder to myself, how did I get stuck in this odd situation?

But then I stop thinking

The sun pops out from beyond the mist and all my worries vanish into the stacks of smoke

I wrote this while looking at a Georgia O'Keeffe painting, "East river." I tried to imagine what it was like to be in her shoes while painting this.
