“I do not like them,
Sam-I-am,
I do not like
Green eggs and ham.”

Nan read aloud
With a warm, loving voice.
I loved to sit and listen,
And watch the robins outside.

“I would not like them
Here or there.
I would not like them
Anywhere. “

The story made me laugh
I found the banter between
Two such strange characters
Quite funny.

“You may like them.
You will see.
Would you like them
In a tree?”

Nan told me “careful”
As I brought in a glass of juice
I listened well.
Nan was smart.

“I do so like green eggs and ham!
Thank you!
Thank you,
Sam-I-am.”

As always, the book ended
And Nan went to the kitchen
I clutched Green Eggs and Ham
And watched outside some more.

I watched the birds and chipmunks
Come out to play.
I wanted to have fun too,
But Nan was busy.

She could not read me another.
So I opened up the book in my hand,
And flipped to the first page,
Determined.

Slowly, carefully, I sounded out some words,
“I am Sam.”
I was filled with excitement
I could read too, like Nan.

Steadily I made my way.
Page by page.
My mind was budding,
Opening to the world of books.

Nan found a moment to spare
She was excited for me too,
We opened the book to read,
This time together.
