What is mine?
And what is yours?
Can it stay behind closed doors?
Should we keep it in the dark,
Or must we let it free to spark
Ideas, dreams, inventions too,
Innovation for me and you.
Help that flies and books that soar
To fight the raging knowledge war.
All across the globe,
On the farthest deep-space probe.
All the knowledge that we keep,
Freed from its dreary sleep.
For if we benefit all those,
Whose lives have hit their all time lows,
Is it really ours to hold?
Or must we break the dreary mold
Of possession, control, and ascendancy?
Yet is this group dependency
A thought to fight consentaneously?
What is mine?
And what is yours?

The author's comments:
I wrote this after reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, about a woman whose cells were taken without permission and became a multimillion dollar business.
