Everyday War

As she watched her husband march off with the rest of the army
Brittany turned away with tears in her eyes.
But, Brittany knew she had to be strong
so Brittany took her crying newborn baby along.
Her newborn baby had only been a month old
when she lost the person she was closest to.
Brittany had to hear her screaming baby every night,
screaming for her dad who she may not be able to see ever again.
It just didn’t seem fair to her to have to sit around
and wait to see if her husband to return.
Brittany lived her life everyday fighting to force a smile on her face.
Not only did she have to watch her newborn daughter all of the time,
she also had to work.
In some ways it was better this way,
Brittany reminded herself.
That way she was distracted,
she just wished there was a way to calm her daughter down.
When her husband finally did come home
he told her he had to tell her something.
She wondered what he meant.
Brittany definitely didn’t expect what he had to say.
What he had to tell her was that he was blind,
that would mean he could no longer see their child.
She grew up a lot since he had gone,
but Brittany had always thought that he would still get to see her.
