Big City Dreams
During the midst of the night,
a cry called out into the big city.
But no one heard,
for the city was a loud place,
and the beautiful girl’s tears were unknown.
A mother’s passing,
and a father’s abandonment
left her alone with her tears.
She sat in the lonely apartment
waiting for company,
but it never came.
As her sobbing increased,
the beautiful girl took a deep breath.
The very act of breathing
reminded her that she wasn’t whole,
it felt as if something was missing.
Her hands gently lifted to her eyes.
The girl wiped the tears off of her face,
and she looked out of the window,
to see a night full of wandering souls,
living freely.
She felt as if she was trapped,
and no one else could understand her pain.
Just by looking at the city,
watching how busily it moved,
her mind came to a conclusion.
Maybe if she went outside,
and joined the parade of people,
her sadness would fade.
The girl put on her best shoes,
washed her mascara away
from under her sad eyes,
and let her feet glide her onto the sidewalk.
The beautiful girl walked alone.
She put a smile on her face,
to match everyone else in the city.
How could all of the others be so happy?
What the girl didn’t know
was that she wasn’t alone.
Many other smiling faces on the street,
were facing problems of their own.
A smile could hide a lot.
