Deep in the dark alleys of cities,
There are old metal ladders, rusted the color of clay.
They lean tired against
Cold, damp bricks.
They are ladders that ache and stretch to the
Sky, where the clouds glow pink and are dusted with gold.


The author's comments:
I wrote this poem about the fire escapes of New York City. I can just imagine myself climbing higher and higher and higher until I reach a different world altogether.
