Lost, I Assume.
lost i assume.
just out wandering is my soul.
among the others who every night sit alone and wonder who will fix them, and when?
when will the grounded souls come to rescue those adrift?
the better question i suppose,
how can you tell who’s who? separate the floating from the secure.
in the day we allow the sun to hit our face like everyone else,
we accept the smile we must keep on our faces and you believe it.
but at night, at night we fall.
down,
down,
down.
as our arms reach higher and pull harder, desperate to get out,
or flailing legs dig us deeper into the darkness that appears to be our new home.
we find release in the worst ways,
finding a fix with a blade,
a needle,
a flame
a pipe.
anything to distract.
anything to be able to say we have control.
so if you are trying to find the difference,
if you’re attempting to see who blindly flows through the motions of the day
and who actually wants to be here in this moment,
look closer.
stare longer.
as they pass their friends and they release that warm, beautiful smile,
keep looking a few more seconds longer.
you’ll see it fade to match the sadness that lay under the skin.
