You want me to apologize
but you refuse to forgive
— you swallow my words
and throw them out,
throw them up,
because you cannot find the space for them,
and because they are too heavy for your hands to hold.

So the weight evaporates into the thick air between us,
and my throat clenches shut
because I am so relieved
and so horrified
to discover that without you,
I am much lighter.
