I hated it,
The mask that people would ignore,
The mask that would induce looks of pity sympathy,
The one that I hid behind,
It was like a prison,
and looked nothing like me,
I couldn’t take it off,
And it would sometimes change around people,
Not even at home would it would come off,
Just to be sure nobody would see the true me.
My room my getaway,
Like an island oasis,
In the middle of an endless ocean,
That I was too scared to conquer,
To even try to escape from my island,
And it became lonely,
Only when I ripped the mask off,
Like a cicada shedding its shell
and it crumbled away,
Like a leaf in the autumn breeze,
Was I able to fare the rough waters,
And realize what I truly looked like
And who I was supposed to be,
And it was then that it hit me,
That I am happy to be me.
