Pay Attention
Sometimes, you need to just stop and look around you
It’s not something many people will do in their lifetime
Hard for others to slow down and take a deep breath
To chance a small pause in their everyday lives
Notice how the beauty can cover up the ugliness that lies beneath
What’s around the corner just may surprise you
Really listen too, for the sounds and the quiet
Right around the bend where you live
In a small house, a young girl just wants a friend
Front door bangs shut as her father storms in calling angrily for her
Of course, her heart is banging so loud she almost hopes that the neighbors can hear it
Your footsteps are long gone, as you had just walked past where the father had smiled and waved at you three minutes before, and the young girl looked through her window with a small smile that didn’t reach her eyes
Eyes that held too many horrors, too much pain and sadness, eyes that could have almost saved her if you had just taken the time to look at them
