The birds limp body dangled between my fingers
and I was to blame.
The color seemed to be drained from its feathers.

The blood slowly ran down the palm of my hand.
I had just murdered something once free, majestic and beautiful,
I was to blame.

The sun was shining but my heart was sober.
The life I just claimed represented more than a creatures death.
It was also the death of innocence.

What I killed was merely an animal,
but what it took was a part of my soul,
I was to blame.
