You’re ugly, they said,
Fat, stupid, annoying.
You’re ugly, they said,
You’re someone I’m avoiding.

You’re ugly, they said,
Your face is full of acne.
You’re ugly, they said,
Your figure’s really shabby.

You’re ugly, they said,
God, you’re such a try-hard.
You’re ugly, they said,
You should get a face guard.

You’re ugly, they said,
Your legs are big, thick trunks.
You’re ugly, they said,
You’re a worthless piece of junk.

You’re ugly, they said,
Your eyes are way too small.
You’re ugly, they said,
You’re Beastly in the hall.

You’re ugly, they said,
I saw the zits and pimples.
You’re ugly, they said,
Maybe I’m too simple.

You’re ugly, they said,
I saw the elephant thighs.
You’re ugly, they said,
I heard my hurting cries.

You’re ugly, they said,
I saw my whole, full self.
You’re ugly, they said,
I searched my inner colors.

You’re ugly, they said,
I saw my spirited warmth.
You’re ugly, they said,
I found true pride and love.

You’re ugly, they said,
I saw a broken girl.
You’re ugly, they said,
I see a driven woman.

You’re ugly, they said,
I told them, No, you’re wrong.
I’m beautiful on my own,
Whether you see it or not.

Call me ugly, all you want,
What matters is not what you think.
For I may be part of my body,
But my body is not part of me.

The author's comments:
For me, I know that often people don't outright point out my flaws and blemishes, but it's the undercurrent, the behind-the-back gossip that makes me look at myself and hate. I realized that I can't care about what they say, because my personality is what encompasses me. True friends will know that and love me for me and never for my body.
