Your Umbrella

I thought you were a friend,
A person to lean on when I’m down,
Someone count on when I felt lonely,
Guess I was wrong.

Remember how we met,
In the pouring rain?
I was alone sitting on the bench,
Without a cab in sight.

You were behind me, standing there,
I was lost, cold and without hope,
You held your umbrella over my head,
I thought we were the same.

You gained my trust and held me close,
Shunning the rain out of our embrace,
I thought you were going to help me,
You just planned to control me.

You caused me pain through the year,
Told me what to do and how to act,
I was putty in your hands,
I should’ve run when I had the chance.

But you were gentle at first,
Holding my hand through the bad times,
Caring for me when nobody else did,
Now I can’t stay away.

But that was your plan,
To treat me like a princess,
To intrude your way into my mind,
To make me think you were the only solution.

I wish I was strong enough to not need you,
To leave you in the dust without water,
To leave you on a cliff, hanging on,
To leave you in the rain, alone on that bench.

But I know,
Sunshine never lasts too long,
Rain will come again another day,
And I will need your umbrella, once more.

The author's comments:
This piece is about not being able to leave someone or something. It's about being so dependant on this thing that you can't bear to part from it even though it's causing you pain. When I was writing this, I thought a lot about of abusive domestic relationships and how some people don't leave their violent spouses. I also thought a lot about drugs and alcohol because some people lean onto substance abuse when times get rough. I hope this poem gave some people a feel of what its like to rely on something so much for support that you can't turn away.
