Words and images flash through his mind
Abstract suffering, silent pain
The losses he has suffered
The pain he has endured

He walks with the force of a thousand nuclear bombs
His mere presence alters history
He bears the burden of civilization
placed upon his shoulders, bestowed upon reverently

Held up in the highest, elevated to godly levels
More responsibility than one heart can take
His drive is kindness, yet too much is fatal
Even two hearts cannot bear the suffering of eternity

Never questioned, never subject to scrutiny
For he is omniscient
Knowledge is power
Knowledge is deadly

More deadly than any gun, bomb, or tank
Like a drug, a little is just too little
Too much, is just too much

A feeling of ecstasy
He is giddy, just too stuck in the moment to care
Who can blame him?
Too many lost souls to let go of
Too many wrongs to right

Every so often the pleasure disappears
Tangible things matter again
This is the feeling of humanity
The sadness and longing we carry
The joys and surprises of life
Inflection of emotion, a dynamic consciousness

He carries the burden of both
Not detached enough to be indifferent
Just attached enough to feel the pain
Re-live the suffering over and over

Stuck in limbo
Which way to turn, who knows?
A decision that never goes unpunished
A fate always regretted

The author's comments:
I wrote this following an episode of Doctor Who. What I really like about scifi in general is the blurred lines. Where does science end and fiction begin? What is human and what isn't? The social commentary aspect always strikes me and inspires me to write. This piece is about the burden on the heart of doing good. It is inspired by the actions and motivations of The Doctor and his outlook on life and the world, but I feel it can be applied to many aspects of everyday life.
