For Nena
Going outside is like getting a hug from your momma after you hadn't seen her for days or
Laying on your bed with your nose buried in your cats furry neck
Hoping that he won't get annoyed and move away from you
A little monster of love
Going outside is holding your hand inside my pocket because you have bad circulation and your other hand is holding an empty cup of frozen yogurt
Sprinkles and gummy bears weighing you down
Its when you turn on the sprinklers just to squish your toes into the grassy puddles
Letting the water rush over your feet as your press farther and farther down
Until your sole hits mud and you dig your toes in deep
Swaying back and forth through the makeshift river
I knew that you wouldn't go outside with me any more
Because those green blades stuck to our calves like glue and you didn't want to get the floor dirty
But you would still sit on the back porch with me
Waiting for the sun to set as we sifted through a bag of cherries
Eating only the darkest and sweetest ones
Then spitting out the seeds over the railing
And tying the stems with our tongues
You live in the concrete jungle now
There aren’t enough sprinklers and fro-yo cups that could fill the hole you left in my life
And I only see you about four times a year
But when I do
Its like going outside all over again.
