The Box
They taught her that everything in this world
Fit into a nice, neat little box,
As long as she thought about it and prodded it
And beat it into submission.
They taught her that there is either hot or cold,
Fat or skinny
They taught her that there is only mean or nice,
Smart or dumb,
Republican or Democrat,
Boy or girl.
And you could be gay, they said, or you could be straight,
As long as you fit into that box.
And you could believe that the world was created by either science or religion
But, whichever side you choose, be prepared for a fight from the idiots on the other side.
They told her that she would one day be successful,
Or else she would be unsuccessful.
That life was a test that she would ultimately pass or fail.
And one day, she got a letter-
It wasn’t a good letter so it must have been a bad one-
And just like that
The hammer fell, her future set in stone.
And the once smiley girl, frowned
the once smart girl proved to be dumb
And where she used to be nice, she showed that she might have been
just a little mean.
They saw these contradictions,
And knowing just what to do, they took her
And put her in a very special box.
They nailed down the lid, labeling her “Duplicitous”
And then wrote a very explicit warning sign:
“Caution: Unpredictable Behavior, Do not trust.”
