My Mary-Jo
When I look up to the stars
I think of the twinkle in your eye.
Remembering the times you smiled
While teaching me all you knew.
Just in time.
I miss you so much Grandma.
Only you could fix my knitting,
Or tell me the best way to cook;
You made me who I am now.
Wishing for time.
The warm sun on my back
Revives all of your loving hugs.
No new ones, only the old,
Making me yearn for another.
One more time.
I see mom’s busy hands,
Wet after doing the dishes.
Then I think of the last time;
You were washing celery for lunch.
Every damn time.
I never liked Neil Diamond.
But now I listen to him
Just to see you singing along-
Smiling, sipping your martini.
Wanting more time.
No more homemade cards,
No kiss at my graduation
And no dance at my wedding.
But I’ll be thinking of you.
All the time.
Sometimes I forget you’re gone.
I find myself going to call you,
But then I remember I’m out of time.
I wish I could tell you I love you.
Out of time.
I miss you more than I can say.
When I cry for you it hurts,
Like nothing I’ve ever felt.
I love you more than I thought.
For all time.
