Every drop of sweat
Every everything-you-got-left rep
Every ounce of dedication
Every second of Training
It all comes down to this
We all come to the line
Nerves grip my gut
A little flutter just to remind me I’m alive
The sound of the gun
The sound of wind rushing past my ear
Feeling the soft rubber under my commanding stride
Feeling the fire in my lungs
Feeling my fire burn even brighter in my heart
Feeling like I’ve conquered greatness
Hearing my time
Hearing my scream
Hearing my heart break
Hearing the expectations, over and over again
Hearing oh so close
364 days until I try again.

I wrote this piece after the last track race of the season. It was at this race that I, a distance runner, was supposed to break 5 minutes in the mile. with everyone cheering me on, I ran a 5:01.
