First dentistry was painless.
Then bicycles were chainless,
Carriages were horseless,
And many laws enforceless.

Next cookery was fireless,
Telegraphy was wireless,
Cigars were nicotineless,
And coffee caffeineless.

Soon oranges were seedless,
The putting green was weedless,
The college boy was hatless,
The proper diet fatless.

New motor roads are dustless,
The latest steel is rustless,
Our tennis courts are sodless,
Our new religion — godless.

The sky is dark overhead,
The light turned off for the night.
I slowly lie down in my bed,
My sleepiness winning the fight.

Though my limbs are sore and heavy,
No amount of work can push you from my mind.
In my dreams I wander,
Looking for someone I cannot find.

Far off in the distance,
I can hear you call my name.
I raise my voice to answer,
But silence was all that came.

I pull my legs to step, to run.
But their response was next to none.
I scream for you to help me,
To pull me from this memory.

I’m slowly sinking into this dark,
The black envelopes me in a soft grasp,
My head is on my pillow,
But my dreams are in the past.

I could have sworn you were beside me,
Your breathing even and paced.
But when I open my eyes,
My fantasies were laid to waste.

I still leave a fluffy pillow,
A place for you to rest your head,
And warm blankets to cuddle with,
An absent place on my bed.

Now the feelings are fading,
My fantasies unraveling at the seams
I wish I had not been awoken
So I could further swim in my Dreams.

The author's comments:
This is kind of how daydreaming works with me. Or night-dreaming. I usually pull events or locations from my memory and then add things to them. Sometimes, actually most of the time, it’s depressing because once I wake up I cannot go back.

Really awesome poem. As I read it, I can't help but have the first few chords of "Requiem for a Dream" playing through my mind...
