Upset But Not Broken

When you awake, your room is warm, and you're wrapped up in a cozy blanket.
When she awakes, her room is frigid, and she is laying on a single grimy sheet.
When you awake, your closet is full of outfits that are all ready to be worn.
When she awakes, her single, musty, unwashed outfit is her only choice.

When you walk out of your room, your house is cozy and well decorated.
When she walks out of her room, there is beer bottles and trash across the floor.
When you walk out of your room, your mother has breakfast ready and hugs you.
When she walks out of her room, her mother is still not sober enough to say hello.

When you are at school, you have friends to eat lunch with and plenty of food.
When she is at school, she has no lunch and sits alone crying in a bathroom stall.
When you are at school, people love you and want to be around you all the time.
When she is at school, people avoid her because of her foul smell and greasy hair.

During your last class, you can't wait to go home and watch your favorite show.
During her last class, she dreads going home and gaining yet another bruise.
During your last class, you know you will receive warm love, joy, and affection.
During her last class, she knows her home life is becoming extremely unsafe, and she just hopes to see another day.


The author's comments:
To often people as blessed as me forget how bad others have it. We forget that there is so much going on that we are oblivious too. We complain rather than act thankful for what amazing families we really do have. Too many people have worked too hard and sacrificed too much to get us to where we are today.
