Hurricane Sandy
The sun has just cracked over the horizon
which explained the sound of a hurdling train,
even though there were none,
for miles away.
For it was not devastation we saw,
nor hunger nor pain.
But for some a miracle, in a way.
Sandy had left us without destruction,
but rather with excitement and great elation.
The view over the boardwalk left us in awe,
it was a sight we see just once-in-a-while.
For the sight I saw,
gave me quite a smile.
The rush of the waves covered all of the sand,
they sounded louder than a marching band.
With every wave that broke,
came the sound of hoots and cheers.
I knew it was time,
we grabbed our boards,
and headed back over to the shore.
The paddle out began,
we took several waves on the head.
I wanted to quit,
It felt like I was dead.
But we pressed on.
We made it out eventually.
I quickly realized the mountains of water were so big,
You couldn't even see the beach.
I decided I needed to catch a wave,
I hadn't came this far for nothing.
I saw the wave so I turned,
with each stroke,
my arms burned.
I just scratched into it,
stood up with gallons of spray being thrown in my face.
I rode that wave all the way in.
That day will be forever engrained in my brain.
