Where I'm From
I am from a place where your friends become family,
A home where Ai Nako is often said.
I am from the BBQ gatherings on special occasions,
With coconut trees and transparent seas in the background.
I am from a land surrounded by water on all sides,
whose voice is hushed when it speaks a word.
I am from the underdogs,
With the people whose words become other's mockery.
I'm from a home filled with diversity,
From those who are sporty, and those who are nerdy.
From a bed where stories about princesses are told
and as I grew, it came to be stories of our family's past
I'm from the times of Barney and the Land Before Time,
With breakfast of arroz caldo and longanisa sausage.
I am from a land whose history is plagued by history,
And where huts on top on latte stones were their homes.
But I am from the concrete houses with fans all around,
And where slippers must be worn around the house.
I am from a family whose problems affect me,
But still cannot live without.
I am from houses with extensions,
For my grandparents to stay in.
I am who I am because of my surroundings,
And that has made all the difference.
