I'm not from here but I'm not from over there either
I actually don't know myself but from what I have heard
I can be from Mexico or the United States but not both
I grew up in one place but never stayed to enjoy what it had to offer

I was taken without my consent like a robber at night waiting to steal
I was put in a plane that was to send me to another place
I wasn't aware that it was going to be to another different world
I was scared but they said it was for my best and I won't regret it
I had no choice but to go with the flow of what they had said
I had to say good-bye to the place that saw me come to this earth

A stomp and someone speaking to me in a strange language awakened me
I was puzzled and didn't understand I felt different and useless
I was taken to a building that was packed with kids and grown ups
I later learned it was school and that's when that same question popped out at me
I was asked, "Where are you from"? I didn't know what to answer

I have made my life in this new place and I called it my home
I knew my heart knew that too because it spoke to me
I was then asked that question that was stuck to my soul like glue
I knew I couldn't answer it, my heart knew I was from Mexico but my mind knew I was from Illinois

I guess I will never know if I'm from here or from over there
What I do know is that I have two homes that will always be waiting for my return.

I was inspired by the book Hispanic American Literature by
McGraw-Hill, Glencoe, , I wanted to write about my culture and the problems that a Hispanic person has to go thru and the difficulties they have but not just Hispanics other cultures as well.
