Hidden
She walks down memory lane with her dreams in her pocket.
She remembers a time and remembers a locket.
She remembers the smile of a boy so small,
And remembers how her parents promised it all.
He wasn't related to her in more ways than one,
But she grew used to her parents calling him "son".
Adoption is the word they used,
And now she has a brother, someone else for them to abuse.
They grow close and grow used to being alone,
Because they'll be taken away if their bruises are shown.
They keep secrets and rehearse their excuses,
Even though they know their whole existence is a nuisance.
If anyone knew, they'd be taken away
And be apart from day to day.
So, they hide who they are and hide what they feel,
Because the truth for some may be too real.
