"The Last Text"

One mistake was all it would take to cost three people their lives.

You promised you would put your phone in the backseat before you went to pick up your friends on what would turn out to be a horrible, horrible night.

"It's not a big deal," you thought. "I text and drive all the time and nothing has ever happened. It's illegal but I've never been caught."

As you head towards the tracks on the way out of town, a train horn sounds, warning of it's approach.

A cellphone beeps with a text message, and gets picked up so it's owner can reply.

The text reads, "Have fun and stay safe. I love you- mom."

Instead of stopping and waiting for the train to pass, the driver pulls onto the tracks, gripping the steering wheel with her left and and holding her cell phone in her right.

The train travels closer and the girl quickly types in a reply to her mother's text. It reads, "I will & love you too."

Just as she hits send 65 mph of force collides with the small vehicle.

Glass shatters and metal is crushed. It is then that three lives end.

Kate, an honor student held dreams of attending an Ivy League college,
and she would've too. She had an acceptance to Yale.

Jessa, a dark haired beauty who had golden colored skin and chocolate brown eyes. She planned on majoring in Journalism and becoming a reporter for a large newspaper in a big city.

Emily, the star soccer player on the varsity team with long blonde hair and green eyes, and whose mother will forever wonder why her daughter didn't listen to her on that horrible, horrible night.

Three friends, who planned on going to the movies in a neighboring town 13 miles east, lost their lives less than one month before their high school graduation.

Due to one fatal mistake to send the last text.

This semester one of my classes is Creative Writing. We just finished a 10 poem unit called Prose & Poetry. For my free verse poem I decided to write about a topic that is pretty popular- texting and driving.
