Hometown
State and Lake,
Portillo's with two floors,
Impossible to wake,
and the beautiful lake shore.
Silent smiles and nods full of honesty.
Colorful variety of people and cultures.
Residents that will never have enough modesty.
A place in which we want to take down vultures.
Cars yelling at the top of their lungs,
screaming that the meeting has already begun.
Deep dish pizza and a cold soda,
the orchestra breathing at the coda.
Bright lights and forced all-nighters.
Not MMA, but street fighters.
Shot after shot, another child is dead.
No one is safe, not even in the comforts of your bed.
Don't walk into their territory,
If you come out alive, behind you, you will have a terrible story.
"No child left behind" is what we believe.
But news that a child is left behind is all we receive.
I close my eyes and I wish it could all end.
I wish the violence in my beautiful Chicago was all pretend.
But one day, one day when we realize we are strong,
we will prove all the enemies wrong.
Until then I will continue to love the little things of my hometown.
And I know, as a Chicagoan, nothing can bring us down.
