I am from
I am from Scott and Kirsten
I am from; “you’re the first child so we don’t know what to do”
I am from being bribed with toys because I had no siblings to play with
I am from 59335 Evangeline Avenue
I am from a southern state of mind
From; “Lets go swim in the bayou”
To holding doors open for strangers
I am from soul foods and sweet tea
From crawfish drowned in spices to jambalaya so hot it’ll burn your tongue off
I am from Mardi Gras in New Orleans
I am from fighting ladies for beads during a parade to
“Hey! Throw me some thing mister”
I am from getting down and dirty in the mud
And then all sweet and sassy for a wedding
I am from God
I am from St. John the Baptist Catholic church
I am from Midnight masses and communion every Sunday
I am from Catechism classes and long catholic wedding
I am from southern gospel songs
I am from fishing in my backyard
To late night bonfires
I am from 60 degrees winters
And even hotter summers
I am from “Respect your elders”
To kneeling on rice when in trouble
I am from Family comes first
And “Nobody gets left behind”
I am from sneaking out to go to the park with friends at 2 in the morning
I am from never getting caught
I am from water parks and
Grand isle trips
I am from my first job at 15 to
My first paycheck
I am from the freedom and responsibility of growing up
I am from the snowball stand
You can see it from the clothes I wear
And hear it when I talk
I’m from dark tan legs
And a strong southern drawl
I am from Scott and Kirsten
And this is who I am.
