When I Wake Up at Night
Every night,
In the middle of the night,
I wake up because I dreamed of the scariest being in existence,
And no one was there to make it go away…
And after I wake up,
And catch my breath,
And slow my speeding heart,
It takes almost all night,
To make my sleep restart…
Then when I do finally fall back asleep,
My terror awakens again.
It chases me until I am cornered,
And have no choice but to let it swallow my soul.
Then I wake up again.
This time in tears.
No one is beside me to wipe the tears away
To tell me it was just a dream
And that they will always be here
Right here beside me
To chase all my bad dreams away
Until they disappear completely
Until they will no longer hunt me
So I can finally rest
Have a good night’s sleep
And dream of things that soothe my soul
And make me wake up smiling
Then I won’t have to think
Think during the day
Of how my horrible dreams
Make me wake up at night
