"The Insanity of Vanity"
I got these rhymes in my mind
and this knot in my chest
with this notion that I got somethin’ to prove to the rest
and I didn’t come here to jest.
The best.
Some people think I’m pretty fantastic
but I just tell them, I hope they're bein’ sarcastic.
My hope is that the change in your day from this song is pretty drastic.
There are some issues with society
and some with myself
that I’d like to pull down from that dusty top shelf.
I want you to not only look at yourself
but think about that kid, who at 15, couldn’t stop cutting himself.
Or the hundreds of un-saluted veterans who fought the Viet Cong
and the number of decisions I went about wrong.
These are the things I sing about in this song.
I’m not one of those kids to take a hit from a bong
to drown away my sorrows
and numb away my pain.
No, I ain’t lookin’ for fame,
I’m just trying to stay sane.
In this world of extreme vanity
people struggle to keep their sanity;
swallowed in debt
with no safety net
so they feel like they gotta bet.
Dollar by dollar,
number by number,
wasting their precious time
standing in that ever growing line
thinkin’ that they’ll be just fine.
Their odds of winning
dwindle as they watch that ball spinning
175 million to 1
and they’re not in it for the fun
just lookin for a quick home run.
Then there’s that kid begging on the block,
standing there in only one sock.
Starving but not willing to give up.
His arm struggling to hold that empty cup.
If only he were a grown up.
Then there’s the girl,
who was bruised and beat
pushed to the verge of defeat,
repeat.
Blood staining that bed sheet.
If only someone had stepped in,
it may have stopped then.
So there she was hanging
All the while quailing.
Her heart failing.
A world of extreme vanity
actions speaking volumes of insanity.
How can you turn a blind eye
as people struggle,
starve,
and die?
Ears burning from words those words of wisdom
Sure wished they had listened
but someday they’re gonna wish they hadn’t missed ‘em
I know I could have used them.
If I had, I wouldn’t be hanging from this little old stem.
This is the world we live in,
a society of unfathomable sin.
A world of countless lies.
Somewhere, a woman silently cries
and that gangster lays in the street and dies.
Can you sleep in peace
as the world around you is pushed too far;
to a state of war
led by a ruthless czar?
I believe things need to be changed
to save the few that aren’t deranged.
Do you?
