I love you Karen, I love you
Endless nights in a frigid reside
I gazed at her frozen expression

Are you in pain dear?
Her years of wheezing silenced
as misery absorbed her lungs

You’ll be home soon, I promise
my wife spent her last moments
dreaming of the peerless desert

Goodnight my dear
Her courage put to rest
Her struggle, ultimately retired

I’ll be right here my sweetheart
A dull institution, I was nothing
but a silent backdrop illuminating
her internal and boundless delicacy

This poem is about the last moments my grandfather spent with my nana before she passed away of lung cancer. It is part of a four poem series I composed in remembrance of her.
