"I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead; I lift my eyes and all is born again." -Sylvia Plath

Hush…Hush…Hush…

The leaves on the trees brush against green knees
While walking along with death
But I only walk to you

Hush…Hush…Hush…

With the bangs and the clangs
Of the orange and yellow flames
And the love that I carry so true

Hush…Hush…Hush…

With the scarlet stained soldier
Too young to never grow older
And the heart that carries me to you

Hush…Hush…Hush…

A foolish friend’s journey
Must end in a gurney
Complete with a lily or two
While I will carry my love and my heart
And walk beside death to you

Hush…Hush…Hush….

With the tears and the whines
And the whispers of “It’s not your time,”
And the distant embrace given to you

Hush…Hush…Hush…

With the mourner’s grief
And the lover’s relief
And I will carry the two.

I wrote this for a project in my English class. The assignment was to write a poem relating to war and Tim O'Brien's novel The Things They Carried. It is meant to show that war can have permanent and harrowing impacts on one's life.
