He Told a Story
Daring him in her tone, she asked for a story,
One to hold her attention and put her on edge,
The sort of tale that would leave her pensive,
Nothing pedestrian or trite in its nature,
A sweet epic that she could tell to their children someday.
At her request, he mustered the very words,
Held her hand as his voice jumped around on the adventure,
And kept his eyes fixed in hers for heightened sincerity,
He made his thoughts come to life in a messily plotted form,
Relinquished his wondrous legend to the chords of her heart—
A mysterious girl, broken and wounded,
Came to a confused man in a dream,
She had sought out his refuge,
And he, being charmed by her dazzle,
Allowed her into his muddled up life.
They become friends first, only talking a bit,
But after some time spent soaking up each others light,
They joined at the soul, promised to keep each other safe,
And through the twists and turns of their loving,
That is precisely what they, so gracefully, did.
The man never did wake from his slumberous state,
Crossing his fingers so that such a dream wouldn’t fade—
But it is after he finishes the tale with a soft, passionate kiss,
She all but just realizes something familiar in his legend:
He told her the story of them, a love he did not believe could exist.
