Life in the Fire

The candle flickers in the darkness ahead,
What is waiting for us?
Heaven or hell?
Death, death is ahead of us.
No one makes it out of here alive,
No one wins the battle we are fighting.

Life is blackened smoke,
It rises then falls,
Changes into abstract shapes,
Then fades away.

Greed is a twig in the fire,
If we lose control,
We will be engulfed in flames.

Think of the girl locked in her room,
Her dad passed out on the couch,
Her mom buried six feet down,
Slowly, they have succumbed to the burns.

Men sit upon thrones of money,
Spending millions of dollars on cars,
Drinking in bars,
And lighting their cigars.

They could care less about Mary,
With five children,
Working as a waitress, a clerk, and a single mother.
Living day to day in a dusty and broken trailer,
With the roof caving in,
And mold eating away the walls.

They don't mind the aging, double amputee soldier,
Roaming the streets for money,
Fighting the battle of his life.
Yes, they promise to help these people,
Yet, they are never able.

Our world is losing its courage and strength,
It is unloving and unfair.
It is every man, woman and child for themselves.

We await the day in which love will rise,
Rise above the oceans of hatred.
Love will prosper through the darkness,
Guide us to a world of joy,
And lead us out of the fire.

Until the angels in heaven are brought down to earth,
We are forced to love one another.
We are made to create the light in the fire,
Lead the way out of peril,
And blow it away.

The author's comments:
After going on mission trips in nearby states, I realized how much people have to rely on each other to survive. Some of the people I met, inspired me to write what I see in the world, both the good and the bad. I want readers to understand that we are all one in this life and what we do creates a ripple effect.
