What I Am
(Commentary on Bronx Masquerade)
We are angry
We are sad
We are confused
We don’t know what to do
I am different
I am not the same
I don’t walk the same
I don’t talk the same
I don’t look the same
Why can’t I be the same
But I can be me
I can be different
No two snowflakes are ever the same
No person truly fits in
I am not the same
I am different
My poor child
My poor baby
Crying through the night
Must stay awake
Must not sleep in class
Must learn
Baby, go to sleep
But I will keep you safe
Nobody can tell me I can’t have you
You are my child
You are mine
I can be like anybody else
But with limits
My lovely baby
My lovely child
I am large
My stomach sticks out far too much
My legs will never be like hers
I compare myself
And it really isn’t fair
Why do I do this to myself
I can be who I want to be
Because I am large
Larger than life
We are angry
We are sad
We are confused
We don’t know what to do
So we will be ourselves
Now we can all be different
We can all be unique
We can all make our own future
We are who we make ourselves
We can be different
We can look different
We can have our children
We can be large
We can be us
And so we will
