He plods toward me,
the gentle giant clothed in darkness.
I grab a tuft of his cascading dark mane
and lightly jump onto his back.
Seated astride this magnificent creature,
nothing is impossible.
His sure, steady steps crunch leaves and twigs,
disturbing the forest’s serene peace.
After what seems like eternities, he stops.
My blue orbs scan the dark,
seemingly never-ending field.
Underneath me, he is a coiled spring.
His energy flows through me.
Suddenly, I let my steed go.
His power never ceases to amaze me.
His strides increase every second.
The stars seem to shine just for us.
My racing heartbeat matches his rhythmic hoofbeats.
Together, we fly, this dark horse and I.
Soon, we are one.
One body.
One soul.
One mind.
We communicate perfectly without words.
As his flowing black mane whips my face,
I see the first sunlight of the day peek over the towering oak trees.
It’s time to return.
We ride slowly back,
a quiet understanding between us.
When the time comes,
I calmly dismount from his wide back.
I stroke his large head,
our strong bond unbreakable.
As I walk home,
I wonder what the new day will bring.

Horses have always been a part of my life, I was first astride one when I was two days old. This poem is what I imagine to be the perfect ride. Horses have always been there for me when people aren't.
