With these lead chains that hold me down
Pinning my wings to the ground,
How can I ever even imagine I would fly
Or even ever touch the sky…

The entire world is my cage
Full of suffering, misery and rage
Yet everyone tells me it could be worse,
Something I protest with every verse.

For what use are my wings, what use am I
If I could not dream to fly?
To be free and touch the stars,
Even from behind these iron bars.

I know I could break out and run away,
But my chances dwindle with every day.
For I am bound to people and things
Yet my soul still can sing

It sings for hope and for light
Giving me the strength to fight.
Every moment I grow stronger,
And I know the night is not much longer…

i wrote this in the dark at night, and something of the night was woven into the words. but, also woven in was something of the dawn and the hope it represents.
