Eyes Wide Open
Look up, look down
Look left, look right.
But don’t just look; see.
See that girl sitting in the back,
With her hair in front of her eyes?
Of course you don’t.
See that guy at the podium,
Stuttering out his speech?
Of course you don’t.
We humans see only what we want to see.
We walk around blindly,
Blindly,
With our eyes wide open.
See that starving homeless man on the side of the street,
Wrapped up in the only clothes he owns?
Of course you don’t.
See that little girl next door with the bruised face,
And tears streaming down her cheeks?
Of course you don’t.
It’s almost as if we walk around living life,
Looking through another’s eyes.
We walk around blindly,
Blindly,
With our eyes wide open.
See that kid who spends all of his time alone, away from society?
He’s hiding from humanity,
Thanks to his abusive grandfather.
But we don’t see that.
See that honor student who seems to have her whole life together?
Her father was murdered,
Three months ago.
But we don’t see that.
See that P.E. all-star showing up everyone during class?
She has to have her legs amputated,
Next month.
But we don’t see that.
We’re living blindly,
Blindly,
With our eyes wide open.
