The Last Christmas
Elderly and frightened and half alive
He had lain shivering so fragile with sunken eyes
A third of his weight had been starved away
Slowly dying on his last Christmas Day
The whitest of winters from my dreams I had wanted
Each crystal flake now left me daunted
Freezing for days and sick in the cold
His dark black fur graying, no longer bold
He suffered
No purring
Stroke after stroke
“Please stay with me Clancy”
Just hardly choked from my throat
Limp, he breathed gently
But too weak to sustain
I held his poor paw
My heart filled with pain
