Standing atop the roof,
Shoes cling desperately to shingles.
The girl’s face being kissed by the Sun,
Lavender hair being caressed by the Wind,
Clouds lazily drifting above,
The Crows call her to the Sky.

Oh how she wanted to be with them!

The cold Ground scolded her for such thoughts.
“Silly girl, don’t you know?
I will just bring you back,
Come down with your sense.
I know what is best for you.”

She didn’t want to go,
But her shoes knew the Ground meant well.
They carried her down to him.
Cold. Familiar. Safety.
But her mind drifted up.
Blue. Vast. Wonder.

Oh how she wanted to be with them!

Her Shoes scolded her for such thoughts.
“Silly girl, don’t you know?
The Ground wants you to stay down,
And doesn’t want you in the Sky,
He knows what is best for you.”

But she wanted to go.
To kiss the sun,
To caress the wind,
To drift on the clouds,
She couldn’t ignore the Crows.

Oh how she wanted to be with them!

The Crows praised her for such thoughts.
“Silly girl, don’t you know?
They can’t hold you down,
Take off your Shoes and ignore the cold Ground.
You know what is best for you.”

She silenced the boisterous land,
Untied herself from her sneakers,
And climbed back onto the roof.
She closed her eyes and stepped into the air,
She soared and the Sky welcomed her.

Oh how she loved to be with them!

I was thinking about the way women were treated by their husbands in the 1950's. How their lives were supposed to be centered on the home and making their husbands happy. This is the experience of a woman who wanted to go to college and get an education or just to follow their dream, while constantly society is telling them to conform to its expectations. These is for the women who refused to conform and did what they wanted to do in life- not what society or the government wanted them to do.
