Lanterns
Shadows they beckon, the light is gone
Sun fades away as the years drag on
Dark is my comfort now lanterns guide my way
Sometimes light is flickering but safer than day
Dreams are a danger and sharper than wishes
Weight of could if’s and cant’s never fade away
Words are a weapon which I serve to yield
What they do not understand is they are also my shield
My heart is guarded but has no lock
Trust has no safety because I am my rock
Love is my lust which I have yet to find
These days I doubt it could be mine
Fear has a sound as it breathes down my neck
The pulsing of each tick as it claws at my back
My pride is strength than does not succumb
To all I want and have not won
A lonely friend and quiet foe
My salvation is my pen that offers no guide
Its resonance is crippling, I clench my fist
Must carry on, no matter the risk
My path is set yet my gait’s unsure
And for reasons which reason cannot know
Will always be done
Alone
Illumination beholds the lantern’s soft glow
Their presence a remembrance of where I must go
I see the beauty, though my purpose is night
Their flickering reminds me of my fight
