where were you mom

Where were you mom when the fists swung,
When the eye turned black,
When the tears came down,
You were cowering behind your secret world of books.
Lost in the world of science fiction or fantasy, rather than your children.

Where were you mom when the yelling started
Over and over,
And over again.
When the kids scattered hiding from those giant boots.
Those boots that kicked so many different walls when they got mad including us.
Those boots that stomped around upstairs,
As I hid in the basement with my fluffy companion.

Where were you mom when there was a knock at the door,
With flashing lights.
Where were you when the he men in black sits carried us out.
Where were you mom when they put us in the car that smelled so new.
Where were you when they put our suitcases in the trunk?
You yelled and screamed, “ No you can’t take them from me, and they’re all I have.”
Correction mom we’re all you had.
