Her face beaming; the skies burst into flame.
The earth is enveloped in a warm embrace, Her face beaming; the skies burst into flame.
The earth is enveloped in a warm embrace,
redeemed by a magnificent light,
draped in a brilliant sunshine.
Her eyes glow; gladness pouring out of her deepest soul,
warmth flowing from her heart,
and life flooding out of her fingertips.
She, Earth’s mother, is ablaze.
Her joy erupts, setting the world on fire.
At her pleasure the fields and pastures glow emerald;
full of life and bounty.
In sapphire skies the dazzling sun shimmers; radiating light and warmth.
The bubbling creek glistens and flows ever presently; sweet and revitalizing.
Life and beauty are in bloom all about her.
The hour has come!
The celebration has begun!
The birds sing her long-awaited return.
The soft breeze dances in anticipation,
welcoming life, beauty and light
back to the land of the living.

She is motionless, lifeless; dead and cold.
She moans, torn in her suffering,
groans in anguish; her face ashen.
Her cold, piercing eyes overflow with misery.
Ice bathes the frozen ground, falling in torrents.
Blustering winds whip the valleys as she screams in agony.
Her heart throbs; raw and bloody.
Her anguish spurts, spilling out of her chest.
It leaks into the sterile ground, absorbing.
A layer of ice forms encasing all life in its freezing, merciless grip.
Vengeance, anger, pain, sorrow, grief…
A slow descent into madness…
Life withers, ceasing to exist and the earth crumples; deteriorating.
Dry and frozen, struggling for air,
its breath and life usurped; sucked dry.
All life devoid of light and warmth.
She mourns and grieves
the absence of the one that once lent life to the cold, desolate wasteland.
Cursing life, she curses death

and its master

One powerful stride; dust swirled and rose to meet him.
Long, grotesque shadows fell upon cavernous chambers, looming threateningly.
Thick smoke curled, rising out of gaping pits as hot flames licked the scorched earth.
Abominations roamed the dominion of evil.
A thick mist of putridity hung in the dank and bitter air.
Decay clung to the dark, grimy walls.
Tortured cries and pitiful moans of desperate souls pierced the air.
Then, in a wondrous moment, a bright light penetrated the shadows,
infiltrating the depths and gloom,
shattering darkness Himself;
piercing the cold, miserable heart.
A fair-skinned beauty; glowing.
With eyes like pure, dazzling crystals.
Golden curls framed a delicate face, cascading over a slight frame.
Ruler of the darkest realms remains spellbound; stricken.
Passion swells like a bubbling fountain within him.
Overcome by a burning desire; overwhelmed, smitten,
he swiftly mounts, eyes upon his prize,
collects the goddess in his arms,
and hurtles into the depths of his underworld

Surrounded by the dark presence; captive,
the lovely immortal wept; distraught.
Neglecting speech; willingly resisting consumption and alimentation.
Fearful of eternal imprisonment.
Still, a spark of hope flickered dimly in her heart.
The King, enamored, oblivious and indifferent to her cries
made her his Queen.
Time trickled by endlessly; excruciatingly.
Unable to resist any longer,
the forbidden fruit; irresistible, so appealing, alluring…
Six seeds: her fate is sealed.
Goddess Earth devastated at her daughter’s capture
Withdrawing hand, strips the land bare.
Full of growing apprehension and resentment,
Almighty sky god sends son and messenger
in hopes of restoring the fading land and order in the mortal world;
to prevent the demise of mortal man,
and softening His majesty’s heart.
Messenger, determined to reach an accord, finds himself in a difficult spot;
the infatuated Dark Lord is not one to be reasoned with.

Upon having heard of the princess’s predicament,
Hermes, Messenger of the gods
devises a plan that he soon presents to, her captor, Hades:
Persephone is to marry him becoming queen of the Underworld.
Half of the days are to be spent with her new Master,
and the rest with her mother on earth.
Hades accepts the agreement set forth by Hermes.
Zeus consents, as does Mother Demeter.
In receiving her beloved daughter
she embraces the earth,
adorning it in beauty; everything wonderful and pleasing to the eye and
granting it life; warmth, joy and hope.
She sprinkles her precious perfumes over the land:
rich and wonderful aromas; blossoms, fruit, and
the sweet wafting breeze.
Queen of the Underworld is soon departed from her.
Shadows creep across Demeter’s face once again; pain etched into its very pores.
Her joy fades, and her tears spill; the land shrivels remaining bare and drained of life
until the return of her star; the manifestation of light and beauty in the dark and dreadful deep
as on earth.
