So much of my life was taken away from you
due to the complications of the divorce
maybe that was meant to be for a reason.
But some much of my childhood I only had memories of you.

The day our families were reunited
I never knew how much of my childhood was still a part of your life.
The gold frame of my first drawing was still perched in the middle of the kitchen table.

When my eyes came across it
I didn't even recognize the oddly shaped man
and the signature in the bottom left corner.

I must have been but three years old when I drew it.
The meaning that was put into the drawing by my hand probably had no significance,
but you saving it with that gold frame brought value to that simple drawing.

This gold frame reminds me
that even though so much of my childhood was taken from you,
The love we had for each other was never taken!

I'll cherish forever this drawing you saved of mine.
As your obituary lies next to it, my love for you will always be in that
gold frame.

The author's comments:
My inspiration to write "Gold Frame" was from a poem I read written by Raymond Carver called "Photograph of My Father in His Twenty-Second Year". The poem is about a picture of his father that his mother had for many years. He goes on to explain what the picture of his father looks like and what memories and emotions are held within that. When I read this poem I connected with how important a single object such as a picture can have so much meaning to someone. "Gold Frame" is written to my grandfather and is my story of how the memories and love I have for him will always be in held within a single object. I hope while reading this poem people will connect with the simple and little things in life, and understand how much meaning these things can hold. Little things that might not seem significant, sometimes hold the deeps connection one may ever have. After all I never though a silly drawing that I made when I was three would be something I would cherish for the rest of my life in a gold frame.
