Opening Day
In the woods, one early morn,
I sat in the tree,
Thought I was tired and worn,
I knew I couldn’t be.
I waited for a grazing deer,
So I could shoot my prey,
Then I saw one passing near,
This buck would make my day.
He did not sense my presences there,
For I had sprayed on dirt,
For hunters know they must take care,
And must be alert.
I let him go, and I went home,
Without my rack of fame,
And I had learned a lesson from
The thicket’s wild game.
