Ashes in the moonlight
The moonlight danced across the waves at the shore,
Away from the world which was still waging war.
I felt the heat of the flames from right behind me,
And then felt his touch as he stood alongside me.
The cool of the sand beneath my worn feet,
Was a welcome contrast to the rising heat.
I glanced back at him and saw the light in his eyes,
Caused by the flames, not the stars in the sky.
I shook my head and moved away,
But he clasped me tight and asked me to stay.
He didn't understand the dark thoughts in my mind,
And the cruel way I was about to leave him behind.
I unclasped his firm grip as I stood before the waves,
Thinking back to those last few days.
Would he really be sad to see me go?
The love we had was from so long ago.
And because of the war fighting on behind me,
My death wouldn't be felt among the many.
