Afraid of the Dark
I am afraid of the dark.
To walk blindly, scaling walls grasping for a light switch
Not knowing who or what is waiting patiently for your arrival
Then again,
Who isn’t afraid
Of what they do not know?
I am afraid of being lost.
Among those with whom I cannot find comfort
In mundane prejudice that is “only human”
Then again,
Who isn’t afraid
Of those who could hurt them?
I am afraid of control.
Being taken under, robbed of free will
Being given too much, crazed with the abilities
Then again,
Who isn’t afraid
Of power?
I am afraid of losing
My control
My safe havens
My light
Of being put under a dome,
Constructed by those we all trusted.
Small and confused
Searching for the smallest speck of sunlight
Wishing for bravery
But then again,
Who isn’t afraid
Of the dark?
