She Survived
She Survived
She was supposed to have been
Taking a shower
But she came across a bottle of pills
They had my mother’s name on them
I asked:
“What made you do this?”
She sobbed:
“I will never be skinny or pretty”
My sister wasn't a “normal” 13- year- old
But she survived
When she slept next to me
In that abandoned house.
She survived
When she was being touched
By her own father,
Her mother, my mother, not even noticing
She survived.
No one cared to get to know her
No one cared to see why she was so cold
All they saw was a
Tall
Chubby
Black girl
But Like the warrior she is,
Once again,
My strong,
Independent
Beautiful sister
Survives.
