Daddy's Day
I walked in on my daddy one day
I walked in but he said, "Baby go away."
I did not listen, I ran to his side
I stared in fear at his pale skin and hollow eyes.
"Daddy!" I cried, "Stop this right now!"
But Daddy just stared at me and deepened his frown.
In Daddy's right hand he clutched a blade,
his wrists seeped blood on the bed Mommy made
I stared at him wide eyed, lost in fright,
I threw my little arms around him and squeezed real tight.
"No Daddy no, I don't understand!"
I let go of my dad and snatched the knife from his hand.
"Here Daddy don't worry, I'll get some band-aids right away,
and when you're feeling better you and I can go play."
But Daddy grabbed my arm, I started to yelp,
"Stop Daddy, no, let go I can help!"
But Daddy held on as tears streamed down his face,
"I know princess, he whispered,"But this is not your place."
"But Daddy!" I screamed, "Daddy you're gonna die, please Daddy stop, please, don't say goodbye."
"It's to late" Daddy whispered, "Everything is getting dark."
"No Daddy stop! Please, we can go to the park. You can push me on the swings like you did the other day.
Please Daddy, I love you, don't go away."
Tears pooled down my face and would not stop,
as I picked up Daddy's hand and let it drop.
It was too late, I grabbed Daddy's hand and held it in mine,
my dad killed himself when I was only nine.
My daddy was gone, I knew he had died,
I witnessed my dad die while I pleaded and cried.
I stroked his face and closed his eyes
my daddy had left me without any last goodbyes.
But even though I don't know, dad, why you did this
you are that special person in my heart I'll always miss.
