I searched for you that night.
Through a cloud of bewilderment and denial I waited...
for a sign, a message, another ring. Not one

I searched for you in my prayers.
Repeating your name, but that only sparked warm tears down my cheeks and through my hands.

I searched for you in my dreams.
A glimpse of your face and those eyes that resemble mine.
Then a flicker of light breaks my vision.
So I close my eyes again and your face no longer.

I searched for you the next morning.
The cold brings a flutter of warm memories of you.
One of you resting beneath layers of patterned quilts.
The cold froze you with fear but the warmth of your heart kept you
Cozy.

I searched for you in my heart.
A space you will continue to occupy.
Your life is my template to trace and shape my path.
With direction hopefully my journey complements yours.

I wrote this poem for my grandmother who recently passed away. I hope that people will feel the depth of my sadness during this time. But also understand that when someone close passes, living in their name is a tremendous way of honoring their life.
