A bitter chill permeates the air,
Warm breath fans across the icy windowpane,
Do you feel it?
Do you sense the pain etched in this wretched tomb?
Do you hear the cries of those long forgotten children?
Their screams. Their sobs.

Pain like that is common
In this realm of hate and fear
Where did it start??When does it end??Will there ever be a time when you can smile,
Without having first,
Stinging tears?

The frost is growing,
Extending,
Frozen fingers jabbing into young hearts too scared to feel.
The shadows are laughing at me now,
The cold biting into my skin.

I feel nothing.
The end is near.
Broken glass and fractured frames are watching
As I descend
Falling, falling,
I see nothing now, I’m numb.

Welcome home, the frost is here to greet you.

The author's comments:
This is the free-verse poem I created for my school Poetry Slam. It was spontaneously written, without any kind of planning. It was a piece that simply came to me, and I immediately knew it was the poem I wanted to present to everyone. It’s meaning is supposed to be slightly unreachable, leaving room for personal interpretation.
